He was the leader of the Gulf Cartel, extradited to the United States and sentenced to 25 years, but not life imprisonment as expected, after an agreement with the US government.  The prison where he lives is a secret until 2028.

September 12, 2020

Of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán it is even known what the cell is like where he will spend the rest of his life -unless another trial is not opened as he seeks his defense.   Anther high-profile drug trafficker tried and convicted in the United States is in prison, but the jail that separates them away from society is a secret .

Yes, El Chapo Guzmán is in a maximum security prison in Colorado, known as El Alcatraz de Colorado for its strict confinement measures . It can be located on the map and is in the public domain where it is.

However, there are others that are a mystery and it will only be known in which prison they served their sentences for their crimes against American law when they gain freedom again.

This is the case of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén who was the leader of the then powerful Gulf Cartel.

Osiel Cárdenas also founded the criminal organization of the last letter, that is, Los Zetas. His nicknames speak of his influence: El Patron or El Mata Amigos . That last nickname was attributed to him because he was behind the murder of Salvador Gómez Herrera in 1998, he was his friend and then head of the Gulf Cartel.

Cárdenas Guillén was on the list of the most wanted and dangerous drug traffickers , according to the United States government. On March 14, 2003, the Mexican Army and the then Attorney General's Office (PGR) arrested him in Tamaulipas . In Mexico, as a prisoner, his address was known: the maximum security prison of La Palma, today known as El Altiplano, in Almoloya, State of Mexico.

His address changed and his destination also changed in 2005 when Mexico granted the United States the extradition of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, although the extradition wasn't finalized until January 19, 2007, and his case was taken in a court in Houston, Texas.

He faced 12 charges for drug trafficking and money laundering as a result of his illicit activities.

It was estimated in Mexico that the kingpin could be sentenced to life imprisonment for threatening to kill agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

But in 2010 is when he was heard from again and he was in Texas. He reappeared on February 24, 2010 at the Texas Attorney General's Office behind closed doors. And his fate changed because he had signed an agreement with the United States, which was classified as confidential for life, according to a report by the newspaper El Universal .

The pact - revealed El Universal - was based on a declassified transcript. The pact: of the 12 charges that he had, only five were charged and he delivered nothing more and nothing less than USD 50 million as a result of his earnings as a drug trafficker. Sources cited by El Universal assured that Osiel Cárdenas provided information on the structure and operation of the Gulf Cartel.

The drug trafficker is being held in a prison in the United States and his location will remain secret until November 1, 2028, the day he will regain his freedom.

The agreement was signed with the government of Barack Obama and a 25-year sentence was imposed, from which the four years that he spent in a Mexican prison and the three that his trial lasted in the United States would be subtracted, according to the newspaper .

¿ And where is Osiel Cardenas Guillen ? It is known that in the United States but the prison of the will be released on November 1, 2028 is a secret. It was concealed.

He is in Indiana. I think Infobae got it wrong because they were unaware his name is misspelled in US federal databases.

It also says his release date is four years and three months sooner than what Infobae says. Some of their articles are almost like tabloid journalism.
Those that say, don't know. Those that know, don't say.

His release date has been amended (reduced) a few times. It was 2028 at some point. We need to keep an eye on him since we could be released under our noses. I don’t expect him to be deported to Mexico.

We wrote a piece about this several months ago:
