You'd think both the US and the Mexicans would use some sort of sonar to find anomalies in the earth to detect these tunnels.  Some of these tunnels have been in operation for several years - no telling how many people they've shuttled across not to mention how much drugs in/money out.

Good point. Both the U.S. and Mexico. These two countries need to help each other more.

But I think that the legalization of drugs would probably solve the drug smuggling problem.

I know that that makes a lot of conservatives crap in their pants when they hear that.

Ground penetrating radar doesn't work well in hard soil, like the clay around TJ. It also isn't accurate for voids or detail beyond 5-7 meters, and one of the tunnels from the Tijuana airport to the warehouses on Otay Mesa was 20-30 meters BELOW GROUND LEVEL.

Apparently there's no proven method to detect tunnels, they just wait for intelligence and surveillance to plop the evidence in their lap.
