Massive Robbery to NFL fans outside the Azteca stadium

CDMX (Agencies) – At least 100 fans, mainly from other states of the Republic and foreigners, faced the Mexico City delinquency at the exit of the game between the Kansas City Chiefs vs the de Los Ángeles Chargers at the Azteca Stadium.

Those fans were victims of armed robbery at the bridge that connects the Azteca Stadium with the Calzada de Tlalpan. The delinquents took their cell phones and wallets, and some cases even their tennis shoes.

In an operation that supposedly grouped more than three thousand police officers implemented by the Secretary of Citizen Security of the capital did nothing to inhibit several gangs of assailants, especially young people and women who blended amongst the fans taking advantage of the moment.

Joel Williams an American expat living in CDMX who attended the game, was one of the victims of theft of his cell phone, and although he identified the perpetrator and reported him to several police officers, they alluded that it was very difficult to stop the thief and let him escape.

John Michael Smith, a tourist from Kansas City, United States, was stripped of his wallet, cell phone and tennis shoes in the same place. Complaints to police intensified when the game ended, without any operation to arrest those responsible for the assaults.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC-CDMX) proudly said that no complaint was filed for the “alleged” thefts suffered by fans at the start or end of the NFL game between the Kansas Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers at the Azteca Stadium.

“The SSC did not receive any complaint for theft or any major incident, and the District Attorney’s Office in the mayor’s office also did not make any inquiry or record for dispossession of belongings before, during, or after the game of the NFL” said the capital dependence through a statement.

Except that most of the people who were assaulted left Mexico city the next day in order to return to their homes. Some of the people interviewed in the place, mentioned that Claudia Sheinbaum´s security operation was a joke.

When asked about filing a “denuncia”, most of the people affected said: “For what? Nothing will happen… most likely the cops are colluded with the robbers”.

Damn, bad publicity for Mexico (and Mexico City, which is often regarded by gringos as "safer"). This really sucks.

I was at the game. Lucky, I guess. It was quite hectic outside prior to, and following the game. Not surprised the police proved themselves to be useless in the situation. I don't think they'll ever get an NFL team there just based on security alone. That being said, you have to remember that there have been cases of people being murdered outside stadiums in the U.S.
