8 killed in gunbattle, clashes in southern Mexico City

MEXICO CITY - Mexican military forces killed a suspected gang leader and seven others in a bloody shootout Thursday in southern Mexico City, which has largely avoided such large-scale drug violence.

The mid-day shootout and roadblocks of burning buses set up by gang members created a scene that is common in other Mexican cities in the grasp of drug cartels, but rare in the capital.

Mexico's Navy said in a statement that its sailors were supporting federal authorities investigating a gang of street-level drug dealers when they came under fire. Sailors in full battle gear maintained a perimeter of several blocks.
Sixteen people were in custody on charges or sabotage and property damage related to the blockades, Mexico City's prosecutor's office said.

The gang operated in the Tlahuac and Iztapalapa districts on the city's south and east sides, where it dealt drugs, and carried out kidnappings, extortion and murder, the Navy said.

The Navy only identified the leader as Felipe de Jesus "N'' and did not name the gang. But local media called him "El Ojos" and said he led the "Tlahuac cartel."

Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera, an aspirant to the presidency and prolific user of social media, had not commented on the incident Thursday evening. He did retweet a heavy rain warning for the same neighbourhoods the gang allegedly dominates.

This was a well-coordinated operation involving CJNG-style blockades and extra-judicial killings.

The DEA was involved in acquiring targets on the ground.

These guys are accused of using a network of taxi drivers as lookouts and engaging in widespread extortion and kidnapping, as well as controlling narcomenudeo throughout.

Felipe de Jesus Perez Luna 'el Ojos', 48 years old, is supposedly linked to a band of Beltran Leyva killers, although he was born in Michoacan and he may now be linked to CJNG. He has at least one narcocorrido dedicated to him.

I would think he was related in criminal activity to Mano Con Ojos, arrested in 2011, given the name, and the Beltran-Leyva ties, and retail drug organization.

I had the same thought about la Mano con Ojos, especially since he was also based in Tlalpan.

He has a certain American look, but I do question how involved DEA would be given the nature of Ojos business seemed to be strictly local distribution, with no pending indictments in the US, or warrants for extradition.

There's talk of connections to BLO in Guerrero and one el Ojo's sons was arrested in the pearl in May, so this makes sense, and the Tlahuac group was a reconstituted version of the "La Mano con Ojos".

However, el Ojo was from Michoacan his top lieutenants were sent by La Familia Michoacana to dispute narconemudeo plazas in the DF, before the split with the Templarios. They're fighting CJNG for control of narconemodeo in the neighborhoods in the south of Mexico City with a bourgeois bohemian [bobo] history of narcotics consumption. This fits with their history with La Familia Michoacana.

You're right that they now are tied to Sinaloa, who supply the perico that is a primary part of their narconemudeo.

On a side note, police say el Ramoncito, known as El niño sicario, was killed with el Ojos.

Those that say, don't know. Those that know, don't say.
