I have a question for an addict or ex addict on methadone

I personally know someone who has been on methadone for maybe 10 years or so.She can't even function or get out of bed without it .Unfortunately she's just been given a stage 4 cancer  diagnosis[terminal].Doctors tell her she has 6-8 months to live with no treatment but with treatment similar patients have lived 3-5 years.I think they have come a long way with treatments and people are living longer with cancer.Anyway the doctor's say no more methadone because it could make the chemo ineffective so yesterday she got her last doseage and they are cutting her off.No reduction just off because time is of the essence to begin treatment ASAP.Her husband says shes going nuts.Someone on here said that methadone withdrawal is almost a month and worse than herion withdrawal.Everyone is afraid shes going to use illegally, maybe go to herion and render her chemo ineffective. Its not like she wanted to quit. She was forced for health reasons.Any feedback would be appreciated.Thanks.

Why doesnt she get a subutex or suboxone prescription?  It is much much easier to ween yourself off than methadone. Subutex you can use everyday and feel fine if you have to take a day off and when you dont have it you dont withdrawal like most opiate withdrawals.  Its a miracle drug really. I used it to kick oxycontin.

She Can't JUST Stop methadone, especially being ON IT for 10 yrs.  The Dr has to lower her dose everyday till she's off it. You can't substitute soboxone, methadone is much more powerful,  the fact that methadone has no drug to cure methadone,  methadone is the cure.

I second the Suboxone therapy. The active ingredient is Buprenorphine, which,if you Google it,will indicate other brand names it is available in. The dosage is much smaller but is still very effective.

listen to me I know what I am talking about I shoot heroin daily for like 5 years now

impossible to just stop methadone you will have severe withdrawals for a month or two then not feel right for 8 or 9 months

don't use suboxone is harder to get off

could try kratom tea

the only way and you don't want to hear it to kick methadone pretty painlessly. use heroin everyday for a month to get hooked on that then a 5 day detox with suboxone.

methadone is very very hard to get off of especially after that long withdrawal is a living hell

Agree 100%, that`s my experience too. (not as a user but from another point of view)
You are correct in every detail. The "cold turkey" (withdrawal without substitution) from Methadone will create a monster..

My father used methadone for 20 years after more than 10 years of heroin use.

He finally weened himself off of it [he had been buying it from the black market, which was unreliable] with the help of his primary care physician, who he was quite embarrassed to inform of his addiction, because he hid it very well. My father was forced to tell his doctor, his orthopedic doctor, and finally his gastroenterologist, because he was having several operations that required anesthesia, and it would have been dangerous not to inform them.

His primary care physician was very understanding and prescribed him an ample supply of methadone, which he used to slowing ween himself off of. It has been over seven years since he stopped using altogether, and he still has a very difficult time sleeping, he has odd side effects, like restless leg syndrome, and has a low tolerance for many medications, particularly opiates, which make him sick now.

On a side note, he had over 300 tablets of 10mg methadone left over after he stopped using, and decided to sell them. He sold them to a wealthy addict who was already a client at a methadone clinic, as well as a heroin user, alcoholic, and oxycodone user. He has a lifetime ban on driving after 5 dui's, so he sent his driver with a personal check to pick up the tablets. I couldn't believe my father was willing to take a personal check, but even worse, he insisted on it, because he has an overabundance of undeclared cash. The driver was promised half of the tablets as payment by the purchaser for completing the transaction.

The driver and my father met on a rural road and completed the transaction. About a week later my father received a call from the city police in the town where the purchaser and driver live. They asked him if he knew the driver, and my dad said he had only met him once. The police officer on the phone said the driver was found dead in his apartment, and they had no way of notifying his family and the only contact they found was my father's phone number in the deceased man's wallet.

Thanks Chivis for the info and on MB too.I'm sure the oncologists know this info too or should be collaborating with the GP doctor.I'm sure they will figure it out.It could be just her overreacting which I can't blame her. She's scared and has trouble coping with normal everyday life let alone a terminal cancer diagnosis. It's a double whammy for her.

Thanks guys for all your replies.A lot of this is 3rd hand information. This lady and I had a falling out over $1000.00 that she owes me but I'm hearing it through her husband that works with my boarder. If she asks me for help I would [as I went through 6 rounds of chemo,25 radiation and surgery for breast cancer 9 years ago]but I'm not offering and have no experience with methadone. That's where you guys come in.Even though I don't talk to the woman as I think shes a scammer I still feel for her.

I am sorry I just saw this post.  I  am a recovering Heroin, Oxy, anything opiate addict.  Now a lot of NA people will think I am fucking insane but this is what has worked for me and that's all that matters to me. I do not do any hard drugs anymore.  I do take my methadone but it does not do anything other than keep cravings away and withdrawls also.  I feel so sorry for her because I know that she is in hell right now.  A few things I can recommend and I only recommend these based on the situation and the issue at hand.  I mean if she has to use some drugs to get off the methadone then off of them fuck it.  I would recommend going to a doctor asap that is open minded.  I would ask for Benzos she needs to be careful because that can interact with methadone and kill you.  And she will have methadone in her for a long ass time because she has been on maitnence and its built up.  But those can really help, also hash oil if you can get it is amazing it is the only medication that I use for anything.  I smoke it regularly but also consume High Content CBD oil which has shown to actually combat cancer.  In fact you should go get her some CBD Oil right now Hippie Honey is a good brand, google it read about it.  It really is an amazing drug.  Also if she can get some type of sleeping med.  I never have kicked off methadone.  I have off suboxone and it was a nightmare I did not sleep for 7 days with no drugs at all and I felt like I was going to rip my skeleton out of its skin.  That is the only way I can describe withdrawl is the worst flu ever and allergy attack accompanied by the utter feeling of wretchedness where your bones feel like they want to be ripped out of your body it is an amazingly horribly feeling those who know will tell you.  I have been clean off of opiates for a little over 7 months now, before that I had about three years of 6 months clean one week relapse 6 months clean etc. I chose methadone as a last result which was dumb it ended up working the best and was cheapest.  I do smoke hash oil but at least its not cigarettes.  I do not drink or do any other types of meds drugs etc.  I finally have a family and am happy.  Drugs took me to raves, strange trips, prison, parole, nothingness, and finally I got clean and now am living a great life.  If anyone reading this is using even if your shooting H there is hope.  People do care and you can get clean.  I really feel for this lady because it sounds like she has done that.  I would not recommend street dope, but I would getting a doctor or facility to help her she needs medical help she is not going to be able to just suck it up.

Just read all the comments and now I feel like a degenerate, but Im trying to think for her sake.  Like some said she wont be able to just stop.  Do not take suboxone!!!!!  It has naloxone in it, and she will go immediately into precipitated withdrawls which is hell on earth I have done that also like a moron.  Don't let her take any naloxone.  She really needs to go to an ER she needs to be medically detoxed there are facilities that do this.

I'm happy for you you were able to clean up.It gives others in the same boat you were in inspiration. If not just to help yourself and make your life better you can now help others which you probably never thought about before when you were cleaning up.That's turning a negative into a positive.A lot of the info I'm getting is 2nd and 3rd hand info so apparently they have given her a substitute.Don't know what though.Don't know about rehab.I doubt it.It's a bad time with a terminal cancer diagnosis you can't focus on rehab. She has to deal with cancer specialists, many blood tests, bone scans, ports ,chemo,radiation,etc.etc.Besides what's the point in cleaning up?Even if she does the quality of her life is going down all the time. It's like telling an alcoholic that is dieing of cirrhosis of the liver to quit drinking.Besides she doesn't want to quit. She's been an addict for 30 years plus.I think she's just scared of being off the methadone even though there's some substitute. The other stuff like the cancer she doesn't want to know anything about. Her husband talks to the doctor to get educated on those matters.I just didn't know a person that has been on methadone will be pulled off it with a cancer diagnosis. Thanks for replying.

My advice and this is quick so don't watch it too much, ... coming off the methadone ... it can be done quick like like or 50% straight away fairly painlessly. In your (harsh) situation just ditch it ASAP you will feel like shit for a few days / week BUT YOU WILL LIVE and things will IMPROVE you will FEEL IT, just HAVE FAITH also there's benzos / zopiclone which can be totally helpful, when not abused - decent sleep is important - BUT they're a nightmare to get hold of most of the time (wonder why?) also a respectful use of ganja will help when the time is right Especially during chemo, all I can say is I got down to like 4/5ml methadone (literally a drop) a day from 90ml daily in the space of month or so and my mind was still telling me I needed it so the withdrawal was maybe 70% psychological, also if I take a vitamin tablet and I tell myself its valium (sounds stupid, I know) about 30 minutes later I'll get a sleepy feeling this is how I know FOR SURE mind over matter WORKS just try keep centered, grounded, connected to Source and Light, even when feeling shittiest, try to be positive and happy, keep moving about and doing things even reading or just letting a play or opera idle away in the background, stay away from news depressing bullshit, other druggies etc. it might sound impossible BUT IT CAN BE DONE. God Bless You and like I say if I went from 90ml daily straight to 45 then 5ml every 2days basically I came down from 90ml daily to like 2drops in a few weeks just made sure I had plenty of benzos (which was hard work) and ganja and eat well, like vitamins and fruit etc. and yeah I was OK not perfect but OK. From what your situation is I'm going to ask other peoples' opinions, you're not alone, try do the 80 to like 30 or 40ml (half-way) and then within a few days you'll be well on your way, that last jump is the "hard" bit. Please try Keep smiling :) PEACE.

She's been off the methadone for 2 days now. She's been on it for 11 years.Doctor's have prescribed morphine or hydromorphone in its place .She said it's morphine but doc's prescribed for back pain due to the cancer being there.
