EDOMEX: 6 Dead After Armed Civilians Attack Mexican Armed Forces

Mexico City (apro)-Four months after the execution of 22 civilians at the hands of army personnel in the town of Tlatlaya, this morning there was another shootout in the communities of San Jose Estancia Grande and Santa Rosa, municipality of Luvianos, State of Mexico; six people were killed and four more were arrested by National Defense personnel.

Luvianos is located approximately 70 km away from Tlatlaya.

The Senator of the PRD, Alejandro Encinas, demanded in a statement to the national defense Secretariat (Sedena) to "take notice of the incident, since we have information that a convoy of soldiers was patrolling in the area".

Chairman of the Bicamaral Committee of national security, the PRD legislator also confirmed that there is a great "protection ring" on the authorities of the State of Mexico and is awaiting an answer from Sedena general , Salvador Cienfuegos.

According to the public security secretariat (SSC) of the State of Mexico, the confrontation took place this morning, when elements of the army found a camp in the southern part of the Cerro de la Culebra, where several people were gathered.

Upon arrival, during a routine check, subjects fired upon military personnel. These "repelled the aggression", sparking the confrontation that lasted several minutes.

According to the official information of the State of Mexico, six people were killed, rifles and handguns were found, ammunition and drugs were also seized.

Staff of the Secretariat of public safety and of the Attorney General of Justice of the State of Mexico (PGJEM) went to the site of the incident. However,  it has not been confirmed whether the confrontation took place as part of the specific operations against organized crime in the southern part of the State of Mexico.

Luvianos is a local municipality adjacent to Michoacan. For years, the area has a presence of cartels likeLa Familia and the Knights Templar.
