@Podrido: I know people have tried to make some kind of logic in the past tying these subsets to certain cities. Sometimes they are, and sometimes not. The neverending myth of Rojos from Reynosa and Metros from Matamoros, just because they start with the same letter, and then somehow they happened to swap cities, is probably the most prominent example.
I guess one gotta a send a letter to one particular Supermax to get the real answer to that, but looking at the origin of most of these groups, they were the 35 or men/bodyguards of some narco boss within CDG, and then they were dissolved after the boss was taken down, or lived on with a new boss or restarted like we have seen recently with los Escorpiones or los Rojos.
Los Tangos were Meme Locos men, and they were pretty much absorbed in other groups and particularly los Zetas, which they worked closely with, after he got arrested. Except El JC who started his own group down in Tampico with among others, Juan Gabriel Montes Sermeño AKA El Sierra. I have been twisting my brain to find out what this group was named, but all claves are just numbers, and a bunch of them are still shotcallers down there, like El 20 or Antonio Daniel Villegas Vazquez AKA el Travieso or El 33 AKA Alejandro Ochoa Garcia AKA Cano or el 82 AKA Rafael Issasi Garcia AKA Rafa AKA Rafita. If somebody knows the name of this faction, please come forward.
Los Metros were, from my understanding, actually from Monterrey, and were a construct that came about when Los Pedraza were incorporated into CDG. They had previously been with Sinaloa.
Los Lobos were also a construct when CDG took over Nuevo Laredo in 2003 and had to strike deals with local criminals. It consisted originally of people from the Flores Soto crime family, Los Ortiz Medina and Los Tejas (e.g. Z-40). El Karis rebooted the franchise as Los Ls in Matamoros.
How do you know the Gulf Cartel has 100 gunmen J? Based on the Tijuana Cartel, Teo's figures? That seems low for the Gulf Cartel which has presence in different cities and states. Didn't the Los Zetas had 300 gunmen in Monterrey metropolitan area alone? I remember reading that from the Insight America's Organized Crime "Battle for Monterrey" section.
Also don't Los Zetas/and Gulf Cartel operate more as paramilitaries compared to other cartels like the Sinaloa and Tijuana which are more low key in terms of presence.
Osiel Cardenas Guillen:
Jul. 2, 1999 solely in charge of CDG after he wacked Angel Salvador Gomez Herrera AKA el Chava Gomez

2007 Z3 Sole leader of Los Zetas
Feb. 28, 2010 Break with CDG
Mid 2012 Los Talibanes split
Oct 7, 2012 Z3 El Lazca killed - Z40 Miguel Treviño Morales in charge
April 2013 CDN appears in public first time
Jul 15, 2013 Z40 arrested - Z42 Omar Trevino Morales in charge

Heriberto Hiram Saenz Martinez, older brother of Victor Saenz, which is "Jefe de la oficina de gobierno" of Francisco Javier Garcia Cabeza de Vaca was shot yesterday on presumably the orders of Flaco Sierra, executed by a command from Metro 22 Juan Carlos Avila AKA La Mierda along with his brother El Mimi, who calls himself Metro 1.
Another Comandante Niño tried to ambush Fuerza Tamaulipas in Las Fuentes in Reynosa.
Los Cyclones and Escorpiones threw a granade in a shopping center in Matamoros evidently in order to divert attention from their kidnapping of ex deputy Juan José Camorlinga Guerra 5 days ago. They blamed los Metros for coming to heat up the plaza.
