San Pedro Peralta, Q.R. — A Colombian plane that crashed near Chetumal has been reported loaded with a ton of cocaine allegedly bound for the United States.
Residents of the small town in the south of the state say they heard a rumble from the sky which was the descent of the Cessna-type plane that crashed in the jungle approximately 12 kilometers from their town.
The plane crashed shortly before midnight on Sunday, apparently due to mechanical failure. The aircraft was being tracked by military authorities, and when it hit the ground, created an immediate deployment of soldiers to the area.
The plane, which was discovered by a military helicopter, was found on the ground in an inaccessible jungle area 12 kilometers from San Pedro Peralta, about 85 kilometers from Chetumal.
Soldiers from the 34th Zona Militar were forced to cut a trail into the jungle to reach the plane. When they arrived, they found two men on board, one of which, the co-pilot, was deceased. The pilot of the plane was taken to the Military Hospital of Chetumal in serious condition.
The area in the San Pedro Peralta fields where the plane went down remains cordoned off. There has not yet been a full, official report on the accident.
In October, two small aircraft believe used in Colombia drug runs were found burning along the state border with Belize.
In December, a US-registered plane loaded with a ton of cocaine landed at the Chetumal International Airport without permission when the plane changed course after the two men on board saw police on the Belize highway.
CHETUMAL, Q. Roo.- On Sunday afternoon it was learned that a small plane loaded with drugs, which was destined for Belize, had fallen between the municipalities of Othón P. Blanco and Bacalar, it was not until after midnight when the military located the place of the crash, where the pilot was seriously injured and one more person died.
It transpired that the Cessna plane made impact very close to San Pedro Peralta, the military had to open 12 kilometers of gaps with machetes to reach the craft that was carrying 400 kilos of cocaine.
In the plane was located, in addition a dead person and other two with life, one seriously injured; the identity of the people is unknown, but it was learned that one responds to the alias of 'El Sinaloense' and another one like 'El Colombiano', both were taken to the General Hospital, guarded by police and sailors, due to the fear of a rescue or execution by organized crime so that they do not give up information.
One of the injured was discharged during the afternoon and taken to the Attorney General's Office, where he was placed at the disposal of the federal agents, who will keep a permanent guard inside the hospital, while discharging the injured, which is not known if it is 'El Colombiano' or 'El Sinaloense'.
The plane was being monitored, but the tracking was lost approximately 12 kilometers from San Pedro Peralta, where the aircraft fell, apparently due to mechanical failure. The forced landing zone is located 85 kilometers from Chetumal.
