The Associated Press has learned that the head of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel was captured overnight by U.S. and Mexican authorities at a hotel in Mazatlan, Mexico.
A senior U.S. law enforcement official said Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was taken alive overnight in the beach resort town. The official was not authorized to discuss the arrest and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Guzman faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments in the U.S. and is on the Drug Enforcement Agency's most-wanted list. His drug empire stretches throughout North America and reaches as far away as Europe and Australia. His cartel has been heavily involved in the bloody drug war that has torn through parts of Mexico for the last several years.
@Valhalla US or MX TV? So far everyone is citing the AP story, nothing else new. I want to see a photo!
CNN just put it up as well
Edit: (CNN) -- Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the boss of one of Mexico's most powerful drug trafficking operations, was arrested in Mexico, a U.S. official told CNN Saturday.
The official said Guzman, accompanied by a female, was captured in a joint operation with Mexican marines and Drug Enforcement Administration authorities overnight at a hotel in the beach resort of Mazatlán.
The operation had been in the works for four or five weeks, the official said.
Guzman, who authorities say has eluded capture for years, is wanted in the United States on multiple federal drug trafficking charges and last year was named a Public Enemy No. 1 by the Chicago Crime Commission.
His nickname, which means "Shorty," matches his 5-foot-6-inch frame.
Guzman escaped from a high-security Mexican prison in 2001 and avoided being caught because of his enormous power to bribe corrupt local, state and federal Mexican officials.
Mexican media is citing the AP that US officials say the DEA caught Chapo in Mazatlan.

The arrest of Guzman ended a long manhunt. It was rumored that it was live in all kinds of places, from Argentina to Guatemala, since it ran in 2001 of a prison's high security in a laundry truck. The feat fed his legend.
Due to the fact that prison staff helped him to escape, there were many rumors for years that received government protection.
In more than one decade of being fleeing from justice, Guzman was transformed from a Mexican kingpin of middling in the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. His fortune has grown to more than $ 1 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which included him among the "most powerful" people of the world, even placing it above the Presidents of France and Venezuela.
