Cancun, Q.R. — An active municipal Cancun police officer has been arrested by federal police after he attempted to pick up a large shipment of pirated goods.

The municipal officer was arrested by federal agents Thursday at the Cancun International Airport when he arrived in the cargo section to pick up a load of what turned out to be pirated material.

According to a statement from Policía Federal, a cargo shipment of “cloned” clothing of Nike and Puma brands was detected in the Aeroméxico Cargo parcel hold at the Cancun International Airport. The cargo consisted of 18 boxes and six large bags of material.

While agents were verifying the content, they were informed that there was a man outside claiming to be an authority and demanding that the merchandise be immediately delivered to him.

When he was questioned, the man tried to intimidate police by asking for their names and talking on the phone with a supposed lawyer, claiming to have connections with the PGR. When he was told that his merchandise would be seized, he then attempted to bribe officers with 5,000 peso to release the goods.

Federal police arrested Deivis N for bribary and pirated material. During the process, his identification was run through the country’s Plataforma México where federal agents discovered that he was an active member of the Municipal Preventive Police of Benito Juárez.

The arrest of the municipal officer comes on the heels of the dismissal and voluntary resignation of at least two dozen other municipal police officers in Cancun as the organization attempts to clean up.
