Bloody day in Culiacan: Three killed in shootout, including a Zambada nephew
CULIACAN.-Four young people were shot this Thursday afternoon outside a home in colonia Miguel Hidalgo. Three men died and it has been reported that a young woman was wounded.
Heavily armed men surprised the victims and opened fire on them. The two survivors were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where one of them died.
Those who lost their lives at the location of the attack have been identified as José Vicente Zambada Reyes, and another man only identified as "Lino".
The other victims, identified as Ignacio Agustín Ávila Benítez and his brother, Trinidad Humberto Ávila Benítez were translated to the hospital. It was reported that Ignacio Agustín Ávila succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.
Around 5:30 this afternoon, the police authorities received an alert which reported that on the corner of Benito Juarez Street and avenida Francisco Medina, in the colonia Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood, there were two people who had died.
One of the victims is believed to be a son of Jesús "El Rey" Zambada Garcia, captured in 2008.
A group of members of Municipal police arrived at the place and found two people dead and two people injured by firearms projectiles on the sidewalk outside the home.
The first reports establish that four young people had chatted, in a Ford Lobo pickup white, owned by one of them.
At one point a command of armed men arrived and attacked them with heavy gunfire.
Staff of the PGJE [state attorney general's office] said that at the location they found over 100 9mm pistol shell casings and 7.62 × 39mm shell casings for the weapon known the "cuerno de chivo" or AK-47. Neighbors reporting hearing bursts of gunfire from high-powered weapons.
Federal police have confirmed that one of the dead men, 28 year-old José Vicente Zambada Reyes, is the son of Jesús "El Rey" Zambada Garcia, who was captured in 2008 and extradited to face charges in the federal district of New York in 2012. He is expected to be a witness in the case against Alfredo "El Mochomo" Beltran Leyva, extradited to face charges in Washington DC last year.
Jesús Zambada Reyes was found dead in 2009 of a supposed suicide
Another son of "El Rey" Zambada was captured with his father in 2008. In 2009 the 22 year-old Jesús Zambada Reyes was found dead in a safe house in Mexico City of a reported suicide, although there were various inconsistencies found during his autopsy which raised doubts about the actual cause of death.
Several other murders in Culiacan this Thursday afternoon
Also this Thurday there were several other murders, including a 57 year-old odontologist named Margarito Lugo Gil, found shot to death at his practice in the Lombardo Toledano neighborhood.
Another man was found dead in his Nissan Tsuru in the Villas del Sol subdivision of Culiacan, where the victim reportedly lived.
