CNN) -- Three U.S. Marines were injured in a shooting south of Mexico City on Friday morning, a Mexican military official told CNN Mexico. The motive behind the attack on the American servicemen, who were on a diplomatic mission, was not immediately known.

Unknown gunmen inside what was described as a Mexican federal police vehicle fired upon a U.S. Embassy vehicle that carried the U.S. servicemen, said the official, who declined to be named for security reasons.

The injured Marines were transported to a hospital in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

From the AP:

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Two U.S. government employees were shot and wounded in an attack on their vehicle south of Mexico City on Friday, a law enforcement official said.

The two were riding in an armored U.S. Embassy sport utility vehicle when they came under fire on a highway leading to the city of Cuernavaca.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said both were hospitalized, one with a wound to the leg and the other hit in the stomach and hand.

The official said the wounded were not agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration or FBI, but did not identify which agency they work for.

The U.S. Embassy had no immediate comment.

A Mexican army official said the SUV with diplomatic plates was found after a report about a shootout on the two-lane highway. The army official was not authorized to be quoted by name. He said a Mexican navy captain was also in the vehicle, but was not injured.

The Toyota vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window, indicating possible involvement by experienced gunmen.

The shooting occurred on road winding through a mountainous area where drug gangs, common criminals and leftist rebels have been known to be active in the past.

The scene of the shooting was cordoned off and guarded Friday by more than 100 heavily armed marines and soldiers, and the highway was closed. Investigators examined what appear to be shell casings left at the scene.

Attacks on diplomatic personnel were once considered rare, but this is the third attack in two years.

In 2011, one U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was killed and one wounded in a drug gang shooting in northern Mexico.

A drug-gang shooting In 2010 in the border city of Ciudad Juarez killed a U.S. consulate employee, her husband and another man.

While Mexico City has largely been spared the drug violence that hit other parts of the country, Cuernavaca has been the scene of drug gang turf battles involving remnants of the Beltran Leyva cartel.

Thanks for posting this.  The Yahoo! (AP) article claims they didn't release which "agency" they were with.  Interesting that it was the Marines.

Marine Security Guards take care of embassies around the world. I had never dreamed that Mexico would become 'hardship duty'. MSGs are a smart bunch of folks and among the best marines.

Which makes me wonder who carried out the attack? Wouldn't this be BLO territory and judging by the "Federal Policia" trucks that the hitmen were in, it sounds like something Chapo Isidro would do...

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican Navy said Friday that federal police opened fire on a U.S. Embassy vehicle carrying two U.S. government employees, after the vehicle entered an area where the Mexican officers were conducting anti-crime operations.
The two U.S. Embassy employees were hospitalized, one with a wound to the leg and the other hit in the stomach and hand, according to a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The U.S. Embassy said it could not release details of the shooting or the names of the victims.
The Navy said at least four vehicles opened fire on the Americans' sport utility vehicle on a road south of Mexico City, but did not make clear if any of the four carried federal police officers.
The shootings appeared to have been the result of a confused running gunbattle that broke out on a rural road in a mountainous area that has been used by common criminals, drug gangs and leftist rebels in the past.
The Navy said the embassy personnel were heading down a dirt road to a military installation when a carload of gunmen opened fire on them and chased them, along with a Navy officer accompanying them.
The Americans' vehicle tried to escape, but three other cars joined the original vehicle in pursuing them down the road. Occupants of all four vehicles opened fire, and the Navy captain called more help. Federal police officers and Mexican army troops then showed up on the road. The statement does not make clear whose bullets injured the U.S. workers
The U.S. vehicle appeared to have been armored and had diplomatic plates
The government official said the wounded were not agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration or FBI, but did not identify which agency they work for.
"We are working with Mexican authorities to investigate an incident this morning in which two employees of our Embassy in Mexico City came under attack by unknown assailants. They are receiving appropriate medical care and are in stable condition. We have no further information to share at this time," said Victoria Nuland, a State Department spokeswoman in Washington.
The Mexican naval captain in the vehicle was not injured.
The vehicle was riddled with bullets, most concentrated around the passenger-side window, indicating possible involvement by experienced gunmen.
The scene of the shooting was cordoned off and guarded Friday by more than 100 heavily armed marines and soldiers, and the highway was closed. Investigators examined what appeared to be shell casings left at the scene.

That area of Cuernavaca is a mess, Beltran and La Familia remnants, Guerreos Unidos, I think too, but none of those groups, I don't think have the strength to purposley attack the US, I'm just thinking like when the Gulf with Osiel flagged down a DEA convoy in Matamorros in 1999, but they were strong back then, can't picture this as a purposeful thing.  Mistake.  Badly trained, over zealous, gunmen, spraying up a black SUV.

If it's Federal Police, two scenarios I thought of first, 1.) Mistaken identity, police looking for criminals, or 2) Mistaken idendity, police looking to kill criminals, on behalf of other criminals.  The Federal Police, to me, have a rep for being quick to shoot, look at the Leyazola incident in Juarez, last year, and they are always getting into it with local police in TJ.

@J. Do you really think the Leyazola incident was mistaken identity or an accident and not intentional on the part of Federal Police?  Not a good example of them shooting without thinking or knowing what they are doing.  But they do that often enough.  In their little brain they think "somebody else is shooting at that car, we should too."

Just a general history, example, of their involvement in these kind of incidents, I think they were probably on Sinaloa payroll in Juarez, and tried to kill Leyazola.
